Yui Yuigahama is the tritagonist of the light novel series My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong, As I Expected (also known by its shorthand title Oregairu), written by Wataru Watari and illustrated by ponkan8.
Yuigahama is Oregairu's secondary female contestant in the major saimoe contests. She established a consistent presence as a powerhouse waifu in ISML and r/anime's Best Girl Contest after the release of the anime's second season in 2015.

In contrast to ISML, Yuigahama is one of the strongest contestants in the subreddit's Best Girl Contest. She has appeared in all of its editions since 2014, and is one of the few remaining girls to have never been eliminated before the fourth round. Like Yukino, her big break began in Best Girl 2, where the last four episodes of the anime's second season aired while the contest was being held. The redhead student earned the #2 seed and went all the way to the semi-finals, losing to #3 Saber and preventing a possible Yukino vs Yui title match. On the following edition, the 14th seeded Yui was eliminated by another #3 seed, Rin Tohsaka, at the round of 16.

Yui would attain her best-ever finish in Best Girl 4. Possessing the bracket's 10th seed, she blitzed through the first six rounds as none of her opponents posed a serious threat. Yui faced the much-hyped second seed Rem in the quarter-finals, with either #3 Emilia or #11 Shinobu playing that match's winner in the next round. In a memorable series of events, Yuigahama upset the blue oni by less than 1000 votes, preventing a Re:Zero semi-final bowl. Afterwards, she continued her unexpected run to the final by beating the Kizumonogatari-boosted Shinobu with an even tighter 97 votes difference, leading into an Oregairu vs Fate rematch against Rin Tohsaka in the title decider. Unfortunately for the service club member, she suffered the short end of the most uneven finals result in Best Girl history as she mustered only 36.62% of the total votes against the magus.
Following this result, Yui moved out of title contender status after getting middle-range seeds in Best Girl 5 and Best Girl 6, losing in the fifth round to #1 Aqua and #3 Holo respectively. However, the anime's third season broadcast during the summer of 2020 proved helpful for the genki girl's fortunes. Garnering the #19 seed in Best Girl 7, Yui defeated #14 Violet Evergarden in round 5 before trading blows against Kaguya-sama super rookie Chika Fujiwara. Their sweet 16 match gained notoriety for its Discord brigades, as both fanbases turned to their servers for additional vote support. In the end, Yuigahama could not overcome the pink-haired secretary's march to the top 8.
In 2021's Best Girl 8, Yui climbed to a #9 seed ensuring an easy route to the sweet 16, where she eliminated #25 Eru Chitanda to return into the Elite Eight stage for the third time. She will play a rematch against the top-seeded Aqua in the quarter-finals.
