Tohru is one of the titular characters featured in Coolkyoushinja's manga series Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and its anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation. She is a female dragon with the ability to transform into a human girl. After being forced to retreat into the human world, she was taken in by Kobayashi-san, saving her from near-death.
Tohru serves as Kobayashi's eponymous maid and later love interest, taking care of household duties while her master is away at work. Her true form is a massive, green European dragon with the ability to breathe fire. In her human form, she usually keeps her horns, wings, and her tail.

Dragon form
In the International Saimoe League, Tohru plays second fiddle to the more popular Kanna Kamui, who became famous because of her highly moe child-like traits and mannerisms. To put it simply: Tohru may be the protagonist, but Kanna is the cutest. This was exemplified in the 2017 Spring seasonal, where she lost to the electric dragon in the final match. In the 2018 Main Tournament, Tohru took advantage of Kanna's status as a title contender to appear in several necklace matches, and reach the playoffs as a 10th seed. However, she ran into perennial favorite Mashiro Shiina in the round of 16 and was eliminated, ultimately finishing 16th after playing several consolation matches.
After that, Dragon Maid's presence in ISML started to settle down, causing its characters to struggle making it back to the playoffs. In the ISML 2019, she only managed to survive until Ruby period (6th). The dragon maid's form continued to weaken in the ISML 2020, which used a three splits system for the regular season. In the first split (a 6-player group stage), Tohru finished fourth with a 2-3 record, with her bad statistics sending her into Wildcards. She survived the round, qualifying for the much lengthier second split, a 16-player group stage, and only managed two wins within Group A: against longtime cannon fodder Madoka Kaname, and returning contestant Mei Misaki.
The release of Dragon Maid season 2 in 2021 Summer improved their character's standings coming into ISML 2021, which used the same format as last year but downsized to 72 contestants. As a result, Tohru easily qualified to Split 2, where she advanced at 6th with a 10-5 record. However, she continued to struggle in Split 3, where she quickly became a bottom-feeding contestant in her group, culminating in her final regular season loss against Kanna.

Granted, Tohru does not have the proper skillset to work as a main, but that does not stop her from trying. She would fly her master to work in a matter of seconds. She can travel to her home world to gather ingredients for a spectacular meal. She can destroy any traveling salesperson who tries to invade their property. If all goes wrong, she has no problem serving her tail to her master, much to her master’s chagrin. Tohru only ran away to this world to recover from her near-death would, so why is she still here when she is clearly more than healthy enough to return to her home world. Truth be told, Tohru likes the human realm more so than her own world. Here, the people are nice, warm, and friendly, nothing like those back home who wish to kill her simply because of what her race has done to their people. Tohru will retaliate should her life be in danger, but the constant struggle between humans and dragons is not something she wants to live through again, if possible. These peaceful times cannot last forever. Tohru knows in the back of her mind that the human life is but a blink of an eye in dragon years. Why create friendships with humans now when she knows she will outlive her human friends and fell remorse when they finally depart? Tohru understands this, but deep in her heart, she wants to keep living like this. She knows her time with them will end in pain, but Tohru wishes to enjoy this present moment as much as possible, for it is the happiest she has been in so long. Only a few minutes left until her master returns home. Bilibili Moe[]
The Bilibili Moe 2017 tournament in China was Tohru's first notable appearance in a major saimoe tournament. Her show was one of the most active factions, which was demonstrated with many of its characters qualifying for the last 32 round.
Tohru was drawn as the strongest character in Group F and easily won the last 128 round. After Kanna was eliminated in a highly controversial last 32 match, the Dragon Maid fanbase turned all of their support towards Tohru, resulting in her 1v1 victories against Konosuba's Aqua and Gabriel Dropout's Raphiel to win her group and advance to the Elite Eight stage. She was then eliminated by eventual runner-up Sagiri Izumi.

Unlike many other tournaments, Tohru is the series' leader in r/anime's character contests due to her role as protagonist, as Kanna tends to be eliminated as a result of the subreddit's perceived bias against voting loli characters (sexualized or otherwise).
The dragon made a strong first impression in Best Girl 5 (June-July 2018) when she attained the #5 seed and defeated contest regular Yoko Littner to attain Elite Eight status. However, she was eliminated afterwards by My Hero Academia's Ochako Uraraka.
