Subaru Natsuki is the main protagonist of Tappei Nagatsuki's web novel, light novel, and anime series Re:Zero. He is a Japanese shut-in (hikkikomori) who was suddenly transported into a fantasy world after he finishes shopping at a convenience store. In this new world, Subaru assumes that he's the designated hero just like in typical isekai stories. He meets a girl who calls herself Satella and quickly falls for her kindness and beauty. However, the harsh reality of the new world quickly strikes Subaru as he and Satella get killed not long into the story; he promises to save her in his dying moments.

Afterwards, Subaru is resurrected and realizes he's gained a unique ability named "Return by Death", which enables him to restart his life at a designated "save point" upon dying. Naturally, this great power comes with several conditions: he remembers all the pain and suffering in his previous lives, and he cannot reveal that he possesses this power at anyone, lest the Witch take away his life or his most treasured people. Subaru then meets Emilia, who looks a lot like the Satella that he encountered in his previous life. His feelings for the girl remain, and the actions stemming from this love provide the main driving force that advances the novel's plot.

The critical and commercial success of Re:Zero has led the series to become one of the most popular examples of the isekai genre, and its two main heroines - Emilia and Rem - have enjoyed great success in the saimoe tournaments. Likewise, Subaru is a prominent competitor in male anime tournaments such as the International Saimoe League and r/anime's Best Guy and Character, although not as great of an extent as the two girls. Subaru is praised by audiences for his character development, but is also criticized because of his negative personality traits such as stubbornness and self-pity.

Natsuki Subaru is only human. He does not possess any supernatural gifts or talents. When he opens his eyes, he is not completely sure why he was brought into this new world, but, for some reason, he can’t seem to get himself out of it.

Subaru always finds himself in precarious situations. Every time he thinks he is on the right direction, there is always something ready to throw him astray. When a final mistake leads to his last breath, he suddenly wakes up as though nothing happened. He is not harmed and is experiencing the same moments as he would previously. What he just experienced was not a dream, right?

It seems that, whenever he about to die, something brings him back to a point before his demise occurs. Subaru is not sure why this is so, but if this means he can alter history so that everyone can be saved, he will do so. Unfortunately, every mistake means he would need to start back from the beginning again. Subaru is only human. There is a limited amount of stress he can take. Even though he has this power, he still fears death. And when those around him are wary of the information he possess and do not recall anything he knows, Subaru becomes desperate for answers and depressed from distrust.

Why was he brought into this world? Why does he have this power? Why does this power provide him with both hope and self-destruction? Running away will solve nothing. He has to move forward and find the truth surrounding him and this mysterious power using his quick wit and thinking.

Overcoming his fear of people’s suspicion of him, Subaru tries to change his fate and the fate of others once more.
