Sorata Kanda

Sorata Kanda is the main protagonist of Hajime Kamoshida's romantic comedy light novel and anime series The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. He is a high school student who was kicked out of the standard dormitory after he refuses to let go of an abandoned stray cat. He transfers into the titular Sakura Dormitory, a place filled with geniuses, and initially feels out of place in his new home. He becomes the caretaker of Mashiro Shiina, a young world-class artist who is incapable of taking care of herself. Sorata later gains the attention of Nanami Aoyama, a ponytail-wearing tsundere classmate who has feelings for him.

In the wiki, the series is best associated with Mashiro and the International Saimoe League, wherein a prominent faction of Chinese voters representing the series keeps her chances of winning a tiara alive. Naturally, the main protagonist also benefits from these voters. Sorata has has made nine ISML appearances, including two male exhibitions in 2012 and 2013, but for much of his ISML career he is perennially eliminated within the last three periods of the regular season.

Sorata finally made his big break in ISML 2020 when he won his first award, the topaz exhibition ring, and reached the playoffs for the first time. Then, in 2021 he became the 26th pendant winner after he triumphed in the Ruby gem round over top contender Kirito -- a testament to Sakurasou's enduring presence in the tournament, especially since the show's other three main representatives have won awards on that year before him.

When Kanda Sorata decided to take care of an abandoned cat, he did not expect the decision would result in him moving to the Sakura dormitory – a veritable collection of his school’s biggest troublemakers.

While the residents of the Sakura dormitory do not fit in with society because of their weirdness, Sorata cannot feel at ease with them because he is too normal. Sorata finds himself having to deal with all sorts of trouble caused by his dormmates, up to and including taking care of a girl too out of it to dress on her own. For Sorata, it is a time of physical and mental torture.

But the ultimate punishment strikes much deeper into his heart. While his oddball dormmates turn out to be geniuses on their way to the top of the world, Sorata realizes more than ever that he has no particular talent. He is little more than a part of the backdrop that will make the light of their stars stand out. Jealousy and fury fill his mind, and his dreams are all replaced with a single question: why is the world so unfair?

But it is in that very place that Sorata finds new hope. He realizes that hard work, too, is a major key to success, regardless of talent. He finds his own target and takes his first steps towards it. His journey is bound to be a bumpy one with many tears to be shed along the way. But with his friends at the Sakura dormitory at his back, there is no way he will give up easily.

Sorata no longer sees his situation as a punishment. Instead, he learns to see it as an opportunity for him to improve and flourish. He treasures his friendship with his dormmates and his ultimate wish to join them along the glittering road to victory. Sorata knows well that if he works hard enough, there will be enough space in the sky for another emerging star.
