Shouya Ishida is the male protagonist of Yoshitoki Ooima's manga Koe no Katachi (literally "The Shape of Voice") and its 2017 film adaptation by Kyoto Animation. He was the childhood bully of Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf girl who transferred into his class in elementary school. After Ishida and his friends' bullying causes the Nishimiya family to leave the town, his friends turned against him and blamed him as the scapegoat, causing him to suffer the same bullying that he once inflicted. Now a high school student, Shouya attempts to atone for his past sins by reconnecting with Shouko and establish a genuine, understanding relationship with his former victim.

Initially, Shouya didn't think so. As a child in elementary school, Shouya was a devious, carefree and self-centered boy. He lived out his days battling his boredom with mean spirited pranks others. When a girl with a hearing disability transfers into his class, he took advantage of her handicap and heavily bullied her. In his mind, it was nothing more than games to ease his boredom. There would come a time, however, when Karma hits back hard. Later found out to be the tormentor of the poor girl, Shouya became the scapegoat for the bullying. He was isolated, beaten, bullied. Even as the years past, he could not shake off the horrible stigma others have already placed on him. With regret, guilt and a genuine wish to undo his mistakes, Shouya set out to do what most others would not have been able to gain the confidence to; seek redemption. The road to redemption is no easy path. It is laced with doubt from others, self-doubt from himself and the cold reality that sometimes, scars from the past cannot fade. However, even if at the cost of himself, Shouya would do anything to atone for the sins he made towards the people around him. Perhaps one day, he may even find it in his heart to forgive himself. | |||||||||||||||||||

The Shouya x Shouko ship won r/anime's fifth Best Couples and Ships contest in the summer of 2019, beating out Konosuba's Kazumin in the final. This was their first ever award in any character popularity tournament.
