Shirou Emiya is the main protagonist of Type-Moon's 2004 visual novel Fate/stay night and its various anime adaptations. He is a teenage high school student with latent magical powers. When Shirou was a young child, his parents died in a massive city fire; he was then adopted by Kiritsugu Emiya, who became Shirou's role model later on as his ambition is to become a "hero of justice" just like his foster father. Shirou unintentionally joins a dangerous battle royale called the "Holy Grail War" alongside six other mages. He summons a Servant named Saber, a young blonde knight clad in blue dress and white armor. Shirou's ideals clash with the beliefs of other people, including his allies, and these interactions form a major source of conflict in all three of the visual novel's routes.
As a representative of the Fate franchise, Shirou's power in character popularity contests is overshadowed by more popular characters with simpler appeals, such as Rin Tohsaka's Servant Archer and major recurring villain Gilgamesh. He was the runner-up of the Fate-dominated Bilibili Moe 2018 in China, losing to Gilgamesh in defiance of the actual outcome of their climactic bout in one of the VN's routes. Emiya is also one of the stronger mid-tier regulars in the International Saimoe League, having appeared in the playoffs three times (2018, 2019, 2021) and winning his first award in 2020 by claiming the Sapphire exhibition ring.
