Shinei Nouzen, nicknamed "Shin" for short, is the male protagonist of the light novel Eighty-Six.
In the story, Shin is a leader of an elite group of teenage soldiers named "Spearhead Squadron". He is a war-hardened pilot with the callsign "Undertaker", and is likened to a reaper / shinigami on the battlefield because of his extreme combat skill and for undertaking the responsibility of mercy-killing his critically injured soldiers. He also carries a box full of name plates of every fallen squadmate with him. Nouzen is later revealed to possess the ability to hear the "Voices of the Legion", allowing him to detect the enemy's presence in advance.
Backstory
Born in the country San Magnolia, Shin and his family were branded "Eighty-Sixers" and exiled from the country because they belong to a different race. His parents were forced to fight in poorly-made multi-legged tanks against a well-armed force of robotic drones called the "Legion". After it became apparent that they were killed in action, his older brother Shourei blamed him for their fate, and nearly strangled him to death in a fit of madness. Shourei later joins the battlefield and is eventually killed as well. As a result of traumatic experiences throughout his life, Shin now shows little emotion even in the face of danger, and displays fervor when fighting the Legion.
Shinei's main love interest is Vladilena "Lena" Milize, a San Magnolian girl who serves as the squad's new "Handler". As Lena comes to talk more with the squad, Shin realizes that she puts absolute trust in them unlike his previous commanders, and she even survives an encounter with the "Voices of the Legion" that he warns not to listen to. She eventually becomes Shin's inspiration to keep living on.

ISML[]
Shin was one of seven 2021 debutants who entered ISML 2021's Main Tournament. This is because of its new selection rules: the Winter and Spring seasonal for males were chosen based on nomination votes and whether they appeared in any anime released during the relevant seasons. Since Shin only scored 14 votes, he failed to qualify for Spring because four out of six males who made an ISML appearance before (Natsume, Zenitsu, Sasuke, Zoro) scored more nominations than him. Thus, he was put into Main Tournament instead alongside fellow Spring debutants Yomogi, Lu Bu, Mikey, and Odokawa. All five failed to advance to the regular season. Nouzen became eligible for the Fall contest the same year because of Eighty-Six's second cour, but he once again failed to get enough nomination votes.
Depending on the rules set by the organizers in the near future, Shin will be eligible for either ISML 2022's Main Tournament, or the Winter 2022 seasonal which is based on his appearance in 86's last 2 episodes, delayed to 2022 March 12 and 19 respectively.
