Sailor Saturn is a supporting character from Sailor Moon franchise created by Naoko Takeuchi. She is one of the ten "Sailor Guardians" who protect the Solar System from evil forces, and is the last such member to be introduced. Her civilian identity is Hotaru Tomoe, a sickly and reserved dark-haired teenage girl.
Sailor Saturn's powers revolve around grim-sounding concepts such as darkness, death, destruction, and rebirth, which makes the user being a cute, quiet teenage girl all the more appealing due to its thematic contrast. These traits make her a quintessential example of the "dark magical girl" trope. It is believed that Tomoe is the progenitor of the moe concept due to sharing the same kanji as her family name (土萠) and her popularity among Japanese fans, but there is no concrete evidence for this claim.
Hotaru has only appeared once in the first Anime Saimoe Tournament in 2002, losing in the second round.
