Rintarou Okabe is the main protagonist of the 2009 visual novel Steins;Gate, which is part of the Science Adventure metaseries. Considered one of the greatest anime protagonists by several online communities, Rintarou's popularity has translated very well to this wiki's notable character tournaments. He is best known for his appearances in r/anime contests, winning Best Character 4 in 2018 after a long history of choking in Best Guy and Best Character's final rounds, including three runner-up finishes. Okabe is also a noted powerhouse contestant in the International Saimoe League, having won two pendant awards and finishing 3rd place in 2018.

Everything is RIGGED.

But even "rigging" ultimately falls into the hands of the voters.
I'm not a fucking schizo. I'm perfectly sane.
What I'm speaking now is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH, not some chuunibyou's insane ramblings.
No matter how insignificant your vote may seem,
it has the power to change the future.
Have you heard of the "Recency Effect"?
If not, then Google it (you dumbass).
Then you will understand how important it is for you to win.
Unfortunately, I didn't give a shit.
If only I had realized how popular my opponents were, I wouldn't have lost the finals.
My campaign wouldn't have turned out like this.
But, how could I have known?
How could I have realized, that by pressing the "Submit Vote" button, I could have decided the entire fate of this contest?
Just think about it.
The average voter doesn't remember 99% of the contestants in this tournament.
We're not nearly as "cultured" as we like to think.
We spend our everyday lives unwilling or unable to watch anime.
Even if something catches our attention, our brain forgets about it a moment later.
I have to tell the me back then:
DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR CHOICES!
DON'T BE COMPLACENT!
DON'T PRETEND YOU HAVE WON THE MATCH!
CAMPAIGN HARDER!
Shit taste is more prevalent than you think, always ready to disappoint you....!

Profile[]

Okabe is university student living in an apartment above a CRT television store. He is a self-proclaimed mad scientist and is mainly characterized by his chuunibyou personality, exhibiting theatrical and eccentric mannerisms that gives off the impression of being delusional and paranoid. He frequently refers to himself by the alias "Hououin Kyouma", and poses as an agent dedicated to fighting against an "Organization" that he believes is conspiring against him. Okabe is also the founder of "Future Gadget Lab", which is dedicated to creating unusual inventions "for the benefit of humankind". His fellow members include the otaku "super hacker" Itaru Hashida and airheaded childhood friend Mayuri Shiina.

In the beginning of the story, the Lab members attend a seminar about time machines headed by prodigy scientist Kurisu Makise. After he gets kicked out of the seminar, he witnesses Kurisu lying in a pool of blood. When he sends a text message to Itaru afterwards, strange things happen to the world, like people suddenly disappearing and a mysterious-looking machine appearing crashed on a building's rooftop. Days later, Okabe meets Kurisu alive and in the flesh, and manages to convince her to join the Future Gadget Lab. With Kurisu's help, Okabe realizes that one of the Lab's inventions - the "Phone Microwave" - was responsible for the strange events he experienced. He then discovers that by sending emails to the past, the present timeline can be altered, and later modifies the machine to enable sending a person's memories to the past, effectively allowing that person to time travel.

The story then becomes a time-travel thriller towards the second half as Okabe finds out that the hostile organization he fantasizes turns out to be real, and he later learns that messing with the timelines produces dire, far-reaching consequences beyond his control, causing him great suffering in the process. As such, Okabe must use his time-traveling abilities in order to reach the one timeline where the conspiracy is defeated, and all of his beloved friends live.

Steins;Gate was originally developed by 5pb. (now Mages Inc.) and Nitroplus, and was later adapted into an anime series released in Spring 2011. Both the VN and anime have received critical acclaim and widespread popularity. The anime adaptation in particular commonly appears at the top of lists of highest-rated anime series, particularly in MyAnimeList, the largest English-language online anime database. Likewise, Okabe has enjoyed positive reception among critics and fans alike because of his flashy personality, character development, and his relationship with main love interest Makise. His voice actors were also praised for their performances. His Japanese VA Mamoru Miyano also voiced Light Yagami, a well-known intelligent villain protagonist, which matches with Okabe's "wannabe villain" personality.

ISML Profile Flavor Text

He believes that lab coats are the epitome of ecstasy, claims that Dr. Pepper is a drink meant solely for the intelligent, and considers himself a mad scientist. Only one man fits this description: Hōōin Kyōma!...although the majority of his acquaintances prefer to call him by his real name, Okabe Rintarō, much to his chagrin.

Like all self-proclaimed mad scientists, Rintarō spends most of his time carrying out what Is commonly seen as absurd experiments. Unlike most mad scientists, Rintarō has a bigger goal in mind: to save the world from an evil organization that he claims will one day terrorize the world. He makes daily calls to his associates informing them of the terrible things that the organization has done and formulating the necessary countermeasures...but everyone knows it is all in his head and that he is probably doing it to get out of trouble.

But when the improbable claims he makes slowly turn into reality, Rintarō has to reconsider his whimsical nature. Could the things he has been doing actually change the world around him? What if some of his choices are impossible to revert? Rintarō does not wish to deny the desires of his friends, but when so much around him has been altered, could he still let his selfishness get the best of him?

With his friends by his side, Rintarō is reminded that he need not shoulder this burden all on his own. Rintarō gambles on the power of his bonds, hoping to create a world free of suffering. After all, it is just one more experiment. What could possibly go wrong?

History[]

Rintarou was known for consistently appearing among the top 8 contestants, but can't seem to win despite coming close on many instances, including three runner-up finishes. He finally "reached the right timeline" in 2018 by winning Best Character 4, making him ineligible for future Best Guy and Best Character editions. Afterwards, Okabe then won the subreddit's second Best of the Best tournament (aptly named "Salt of Fame"), which was a 16-player single elimination bracket fought between previous champions of all major character contests at the time.
