Nezuko Kamado is the main female protagonist of Koyoharu Gotoge's manga and anime series Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is the younger sister of Tanjiro Kamado, and the only survivor of a demon attack that killed the rest of their family; during the attack she was transformed into a demon by the main antagonist Muzan. However, she still retains her human side out of love for her older brother. One of the story's main goals is to turn Nezuko into a human again. She later becomes the romantic love interest of Zenitsu Agatsuma, a member of Tanjiro's main party.
As a result of her demonic transformation, Nezuko gains enhanced physical abilities including the ability to enlarge and shrink her body's size at will, but she also suffers from typical demon weaknesses such as wisteria flowers and sunlight. Furthermore, she is often seen with a bamboo mouth gag to prevent her from unintentionally harming allies. When traveling, she is kept inside a box carried by her brother's back.
Nezuko's loyal, pet-like personality, distinctive design, and cute mannerisms, coupled with the series' massive popularity has made her a very popular waifu character in the anime fandom.

While certainly a recognizable character, Nezuko has a contentious reputation among r/anime's commenters mainly because of her seemingly one-dimensional personality, lack of dialogue, and the typical "hate what's popular" mentality of some users. As a result, her performances in the anime brackets tend to be on the "overrated waifu" type --- high-seeded but vulnerable to being eliminated by spite votes early in the competition.
The demon made her debut in the subreddit's 2019 spring seasonal as the first seed and tournament favorite, but finished as a runner-up behind Hitori Bocchi, which was well-received by the subreddit's commenters. In the yearly contest she was eliminated by fellow cast member and summer winner Shinobu Kocho in the quarter-finals. The following year, Nezuko made her first major appearance in Best Girl 7, reaching the round of 32 where she lost to eternal contender Holo. Then, in Best Girl 8 she was defeated in the last 64 by r/anime favorite Asuka Langley Soryu despite having a better seed (#12).
in ISML
In the 2019 spring seasonal counterpart Nezuko earned the #2 seed and also reached the final where she lost to first seed Fumino Furuhashi. As a result, she qualified directly into the ISML 2020 main tournament, where she was barely eliminated out of the second group stage with 4 wins and 11 losses. In 2021 she will appear again on that year's Spring seasonal contest because the Mugen Train sequel film was released in North America during the time period.

Despite transforming into a demon, Nezuko retained a plethora humane, little sister-like traits. She enjoys the company of her older brother, is confused when others dote on her a bit too much, and gets worried if things seem more abnormal than they should be. If push comes to shove, Nezuko will tap into her demonic powers in order to fight alongside her brother. After all, she is the only family she has, and she can't afford losing him. Be it human or demon, Nezuko will always be true to herself. It is up to others to accept her for who she really is, whether they like it or not. | |||||||||||||||||||
