Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's manga One Piece. In this pirate-themed manga, Luffy is a young man who dreams of obtaining the titular treasure and become the "Pirate King". He forms a crew called the "Straw Hat Pirates", named after his signature straw hat given to him by an infamous pirate when he was a child. Having accidentally eaten a magical fruit that grants special abilities at the cost of losing the ability to swim, Luffy's body obtains the properties of rubber, essentially giving him the versatile superpower of elasticity, which he uses to great effect.

Serialized since 1997, One Piece is one of the most successful manga series of all time. It was one of Shonen Jump's "Big Three" alongside Naruto and Bleach; while the latter two has ended their original runs, One Piece is going strong for more than two decades, and is still unclear when exactly the story will end at this time of writing. This mainstream popularity and epic runtime has made Luffy an iconic anime and manga character worldwide. However, the series is also known for being a daunting one to get into as it spans over 1000 (and counting) manga chapters and anime episodes.

In the wiki's context, Luffy belongs to a collective of shonen characters who may be casually recognized by many people, but are not successful competitors in the saimoe tournaments due to lack of dedicated support, or are deliberately ignored because they're already famous enough that they don't need winning a mere online poll to prove it. However, the pirate has made it deep on several occasions, most notably reaching the semi-finals in the male division of Bilibili Moe 2015 - a highly-voted Chinese event inspired from 2channel's original saimoe which saw multiple long-running shonen series field many entrants.

He will travel all over the world with the best crew assembled to reach the greatest treasure of them all.

While others mock him for pursuing his dream, Luffy’s catchphrase is not only a goal, but also a promise. After being saved by his hero, Luffy vowed to be just like him, becoming the best pirate in the world. Not even his foster grandfather from the military can change his mind. Luffy wants to show the world that pirates can be good people, even when most of them are bad. To do so, he must challenge the strongest members of the seas and reach the treasure first to make his promise come true.

It is time to set sail. The adventure awaits him. It is time for Luffy to head out to his next destination.
