Kousei Arima is the main protagonist of Naoshi Arakawa's manga series Your Lie in April, which was adapted into an anime series broadcast during the Fall 2014 season. In the story, Kousei is a glasses-wearing prodigy pianist who won several music competitions during his childhood. After the death of his mother, he quits playing piano due to being unable to hear his own music, and begins to see the world in monochromatic colors. But when he meets the musically talented Kaori Miyazono one spring afternoon, his life changes as he re-gains the inspiration to return to the musical world once more. Accompanying him in the main cast is his sporty childhood friend Tsubaki Sawabe, who has a crush on him, and Ryouta Watari, whom Kaori is currently dating.
The anime gained significant popularity and high ratings from fans because of its highly detailed animation and emotional impact of the story; it also introduced many watchers to classical music, most notably those of Polish pianist Frederic Chopin whose several pieces are featured in the show. In the context of character tournaments, Kousei maintains a consistent presence in the International Saimoe League alongside Kaori. The pianist has appeared in 6 consecutive editions since 2016, but is yet to advance in the playoffs stage.
