Kazusa Touma is one of two main heroines from the visual novel White Album 2. The only daughter of a wealthy and famous pianist, Kazusa is a high school student who's also a piano prodigy like her mom, but is extremely unapproachable and neglects her studies. She was persuaded by Haruki Kitahara to join his band as keyboardist for his performance at the upcoming school festival. Despite her efforts to turn him away, she is eventually won over by Haruki's persistence and kindness, leading her to join the band, where she is also befriended by its vocalist Setsuna Ogiso.
Throughout their preparations for the festival, Kazusa gradually warms up to her bandmates. She later falls head over heels for Haruki and becomes dependent on him. Unfortunately, her friend Setsuna also falls in love with him, setting up the love triangle drama that will change their lives forever.
In the series' fandom, Kazusa is undeniably the more popular and more appealing girl due to her loner nature, black-haired beauty trait, and "defrosting ice queen" arc. She is considered the winner of the love triangle because she was the first to fall in love with Haruki, kiss him (albeit in secret), and most importantly, have sex with him on Valentine's Day, which coincidentally is also Setsuna's birthday. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Furthermore, Haruki and Kazusa's relationship is an example of "star-crossed lovers" since certain events in the story force them apart; this type of romance tends to attract more drama and higher stakes, and thus, more emotional investment for the audience. It's also revealed that "Todokanai Koi", one of the VN's signature songs sung by Setsuna, is written by Haruki and actually tells about his love for Kazusa - hence the title, which translates to "unreachable love".
Post-Anime Spoilers
The 2013 anime only adapts the visual novel's first part titled Introductory Chapter; by the end of the chapter Kazusa departs for Europe, leaving Haruki and Setsuna behind.
In Closing Chapter, which takes place several years after the anime, Kazusa exerts a major influence to Haruki and Setsuna despite being absent for most of it. Even the mere mention of her name puts a strain on the latter two's relationship, as seen in their Christmas Eve date where they failed to have sex, which leads to a key moment where Haruki can decide whether to pursue one of the chapter's three side heroines instead, or just go to sleep in hopes of making up with Setsuna tomorrow. Near the end of the chapter's Setsuna route (the canonical route of the story), the pianist returns to Japan on New Year's Eve and almost encounters Haruki.
Kazusa makes her proper return in Coda, the VN's final part, where she reunites with Haruki and his now-fiancee Setsuna in Strasbourg, France. She has two named routes in Coda: "Kazusa Normal" has Haruki two-time his fiancee, which leads to an unsatisfying end to all three of them, while the "Kazusa True" route requires Haruki ditching his engagement to Setsuna altogether and marrying Kazusa instead, with dramatic consequences for everyone involved. The latter route is the longest and most detailed route of the visual novel, and thus is seen by many fans as the definitive route in the story.

Toma Kazusa gazes at nothing. Her ice cold stare only sees the boredom of life and the confusion to continue to live as such. She is quiet, restricted, and nearly unapproachable. What use is it to interact with others when everyone is able to move on with his or her life regardless of the connections they have made? Maybe, she will never understand. Add a sweet tune into her bleak outlook of reality, and Kazusa is able to truly shine. Through music, she is able to express how she feels and draws others to play the same tune she is. The sound that tickles the music room shows another side of Kazusa, someone who is expressive, kind, and warm. It is a realm where she can be at peace and forget about a world that meant absolutely nothing to her. The world that she wanted to keep sacred was going to be shattered eventually. When one or two people attempt to enter her life, a swirl of emotions that Kazusa has never felt before drowns her. For the first time, Kazusa has felt joy and sorrow, excitement and disdain, love and lust. Her cold world of white shifts between a rose-colored wonderland and a bottomless black abyss. Perhaps all these trials and tribulations are what it means to truly live. Touching the keys one more time, Kazusa performs her album on her journey though life as an adolescents, a friend, and a woman. |
In this wiki, Kazusa is best known for appearing in the International Saimoe League from 2018 to 2020 because of the visual novel's popularity in China. However, her appearances there were short-lived and largely unsuccessful; despite placing very high in the nomination lists in 2019 and 2020, Kazusa only managed to win one match in her entire career - against Houseki no Kuni's Antarcticite in ISML 2018's regular season. That's basically it. She didn't even win in her seasonals and exhibitions either.
