Kaori Miyazono is the main heroine of Naoshi Arakawa's manga and anime series Your Lie in April. She is a prodigious musician who mainly plays the violin. Her playing style matches her free-spirited personality, employing improvisations and emotional performances which put her at odds with competition judges, but popular among audiences. The violinist serves as the main inspiration for the protagonist Kousei Arima to play the piano again after he suffers trauma from his mother's death. Kaori is one of Kousei's love interests of the story, the other being the athletic Tsubaki Sawabe.
Of course, most readers who happen to stumble upon this article should probably know why Kaori is a popular waifu character in the first place, what with the anime receiving mostly positive reception and garnering a reputation for inducing strong emotions from the audience.
Reveal plot spoilers?
Kaori suffers from an unspecified terminal illness, and her death is seen as inevitable only a few episodes in, when the violinist collapsed after performing her first - and only - duet with Kousei.
Near the end of the series, Kaori writes a letter that Kousei reads months after her death. In this letter, she cites Kousei as the main inspiration on why she started playing music after she watched one of his live performances during her childhood, and explains about coming to terms with her terminal illness and making the most out of her short life. The letter is also where the titular lie was revealed: that Kaori is dating Ryouta Watari.
