Joseph Joestar is a character from Hirohiko Araki's manga series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. A recurring character who has appeared in multiple stories, Joseph first appears as the protagonist of the manga's second part Battle Tendency. He is the most successful Jojo in r/anime brackets because he consistently makes reasonably deep runs in Best Guy contests, reaching a tournament-best Elite Eight appearance at the fifth edition held in 2019.
Background and history[]
While each part of the JJBA series has different plots, parts 1 to 6 take place in a single timeline. Combined with the manga's tendency to kill off important characters, the fact that a certain character will appear in a later part indicates that they survived the previous parts.
Profile (Spoilers for multiple parts)
Joseph is the grandson of Part 1 protagonist Jonathan Joestar. In Battle Tendency, he travels the world with his allies in order to stop an awakened trio of powerful, muscular, millenium-old warriors called the Pillar Men. His fighting style employs "Hamon", a technique that involves proper breathing methods, and a pair of steel balls as weapons.
Joseph returns as a major character in the next part titled Stardust Crusaders, where he appears as an old but still capable man who accompanies his grand-nephew Jotaro Kujo in his quest to save his mother from a supernatural phenomenon caused by the awakening of an old enemy of the Joestar family. There, he gains his own "Stand" called "Hermit Purple", which manifests as vines that can be utilized for various tasks. He is gravely injured during the Crusaders' ultimate battle against said archenemy near the end of the story, but he survives due to timely medical intervention. Joseph then retires as a senile man in a resort town called Morioh, which serves as the setting of part 4 Diamond is Unbreakable.
