Jisedai Moe was a one-off online anime character tournament organized by Tsinghua Jisedai Animation Club, an anime-themed student association in Tsinghua University. The event ran from March to April 2020 under the full name Tsinghua Jisedai Animation Club 2020 Japanese Animation Popularity Awards.[note 1]

The tournament was mainly organized by uoiea1998[1], the president of Jisedai Animation Club at the time. According to them, the club was unable to organize their offline activities due to "special circumstances" (likely the COVID-19 pandemic raging at the time), so after much discussion, the club decided to hold their own online anime character popularity contest instead, inspired by similar events such as Bilibili Moe and International Saimoe League. This was the first such event in Jisedai's history. However, when some club members have informed the poster of the existence of Meng Zhan Post Bar (萌战吧) in Tieba Baidu, which is a major communication forum for all things moe, they decided to share the results of the tournament there.[2]

The event ended with Setsuna Ogiso claiming victory in the female tournament, while Rintarou Okabe won the male division. Besides the anime waifu / husbando contest, the club also held a popularity tournament for Virtual Hosts / Virtual YouTubers on May 2020, which was ultimately won by ???.

Tsinghua University is a national public research university located in Beijing, China. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the country alongside neighbor and rival Peking University, and is commonly listed among the highest-ranking universities in Asia and the world by reputable sources such as Quacquarelli Symonds[3], Shanghai Ranking[4], and Times Higher Education[5].

Tsinghua Jisedai Animation Club (Chinese: 清华学生次世代动漫社)[note 2] is the university's largest community dedicated to the promotion of ACGN culture (anime, comics, games, and [light] novels). The club was founded in 1999 and has since developed into a highly-organized association which serves multiple interests within the ACGN culture, such as animation, comics, cosplays, and music.[6][7]

Jisedai has four official departments:[7]

  • Organization - responsible for the club's community affairs such as activities, recruiting, and lectures about animation/comics.
  • Voice - the club's music department, which produces doujin (fan-made) music albums. Some of its published albums include Green (青), Words of the Past (昔话), and Floralia.
  • Creative - the club's visual arts department which creates fan art books and posters. The creative department also holds workshops for visual media like drawing, painting, and digital arts.
  • COS (Cosplay) - the club's cosplay association which discusses topics such as costumes, makeups, and photography. This department regularly participates in ACGN-themed gatherings such as comic exhibitions and anime expos.

Jisedai Animation Club has also established an online presence in social media platforms, mainly in Weibo and Bilibili[8]. The club's female mascot Peach (桃子)[9][note 3], for instance, has appeared as an animated Virtual Host in several videos.

Tournament procedure[]

The Jisedai Moe tournament follows the standard elimination format seen in typical Chinese saimoe tournaments. Females and males compete in separate divisions. Participation is limited to Tsinghua University students only, and they will need to join the club's official group chat on QQ in order to vote.

Format[]

Nomination

  • Nominate a maximum of 5 males and 5 females only
  • Top 64 advance to Main Event
    • Among these, top 8 are seeded, meaning they will not meet each other until the quarter-finals
  • If there are excess characters for the top 8 seeds and/or the final Main Event spots due to ties, the relevant characters must play each other on a tiebreaker round for the right to secure those spots
    • Format is most likely Approval voting (vote whoever you want)

Main Event

  • Group Stage (not the round-robin kind)
    • Top 64: Characters are split into groups of 8; each group is divided into 2 sub-groups of 4 characters. Vote only one character per sub-group. Top placer from each sub-group advances to group finals
    • Top 16 (Group Finals): 1v1 single elimination. Winner advances to Elite 8
  • Elite 8: The classic 8-man single-elimination bracket we all know and love. A live draw will reshuffle the surviving characters.

Voting Support[]

To encourage users to express support for their chosen waifus / husbandos, the tournament has implemented two types of votes: Group votes (the usual "I choose you" kind), and the more valuable Support votes, which grant additional votes to characters who have received tangible support from their voters via fan arts, texts, or video edits.

Rules

  • Support votes can be one of three kinds of media: Pictures, Cheering Texts, and Support videos (MAD / AMV / voice / handwriting).
  • Since the main event is divided to two stages (Group Stage and Elite Eight), each medium can support all characters who appear in a particular stage only. A voter can have only one support post in one stage of a character's match.
  • There is no limit to how many characters you can include on a support post
  • The same picture/text/video cannot be used to support the same character for multiple rounds.
  • In addition, each medium has further considerations and/or requirements:
    • Pictures: Voters can draw their own pictures. Pictures can support multiple characters and can be watermarked.
    • Cheering Texts: Must be at least 500 words per character supported
    • Support videos: Must be at least 1 minute per character supported
  • Each medium grants additional votes for the characters supported:
    • Pictures: +3 votes for black and white, +5 for colored and moving images (.gif)
    • Cheering Texts: +1 vote
    • MAD / AMV / Voice: +5 votes
    • Handwriting: +10 votes
  • From the Elite Eight onward, the maximum support votes a character can gain in one match is 30.
  • Because of this voting system, the Saimoe Wiki will display the votes like this: Total votes Support votes

Tiebreakers

  1. Higher number of support votes
  2. Higher total votes in the previous round
  3. Higher nominations
  4. Higher nomination tiebreaker votes (if applicable)
  5. Live drawing of lots
  • If the final match ends on a tie, both characters will be declared winners.
