The exhibition gems, also called "Jewelries", are a type of award featured in the International Saimoe League. They are essentially "lesser" versions of the main gems (necklaces and pendants). Following the conventions of ISML awards, the exhibition gems are named after different kinds of personal accessories, and have a sparkly poster dedicated to each winner. They also have no bearing whatsoever on a contestant's tournament standings.

The exhibition gems' format is designed so that priority is given to characters who haven't won an ISML award beforehand. However, this was changed since ISML 2020 in order to allow characters who have won fewer awards, because there would be insufficient characters otherwise. As a result, there have been several characters who won exhibition gems as their second award, detailed in the sections below.

2020-present: Return + Male Jewelries[]

The exhibition gems make their return six years later in ISML 2020, where they are once again reworked: they will now serve as the secondary equivalent to the necklace and pendant rounds. For the first time, a male counterpart of the gems was introduced. The accessory names were also fixed to a single object for each gender: Bracelets for females, and Rings for males.

The rules are as follows:

  • 8 characters will qualify after each period.
  • Qualification Criteria:
    1. Fewer ISML awards
    2. Older year of first ISML award win
    3. Period wins
    4. Older ISML debut appearance (preliminaries or regular season; male exhibitions do NOT count)
    5. Necklace / pendant ranking (PCVPD then PCVP)
  • The voting format is the same as necklace / pendant: Instant runoff voting (IRV).
  • Contestants who are already eligible for a period's necklace / pendant round CANNOT participate in that period's exhibition gem round.
  • Characters who have won any gem award within this year will no longer be allowed from all remaining gem rounds on that year.
What is Instant runoff voting (IRV)?
Instant-runoff voting - Voters rank the contestants in order of preference, from 1st to 8th. Alternatively, a voter may choose to abstain voting for a contestant. Abstained contestants will NOT receive your vote during the entire counting process.
  • Results start by counting the each contestant's first-choice votes in the first round.
  • If a contestant gets a majority (more than 50% of total votes), they will immediately win the award.
  • If there is no majority, then the contestant with the least amount of votes is eliminated. Those who voted for the eliminated character as their highest choice will have their votes transferred to their next-highest choice (2nd, 3rd, etc.) for the next round. This process repeats until either a majority is declared, or there are only two contestants left.
  • When a voter's choices are eliminated before the final round, their vote will be exhausted, which means that their vote will no longer count for the remaining contestants.

EXAMPLE: Suppose a necklace match happens between Saber Saber, Rem Rem, Megumin Megumin, Holo Holo, Emilia Emilia, Shiro1 Shiro, Tohru dragon Tohru, and Cc C.C.

  • Our example voter chooses Saber Saber as his 1st choice, Rem Rem 2nd, Megumin Megumin 3rd, and Holo Holo 4th, and ABSTAIN for the other girls.
  • Saber is eliminated in Round 1, so in Round 2, his vote is added to Rem's tally instead.
  • Megumin loses in Round 2, and those who voted her as first choice will have their votes transferred to their next highest choices. Our example voter is unaffected.
  • Surprise! Rem goes out in Round 3! Because Megumin (3rd choice) is already out, his vote will be transferred to Holo (4th choice) instead.
  • Round 4 eliminates C.C.
  • Round 5 eliminates Tohru.
  • Round 6 unfortunately spells the end of the road for Holo, leaving only Shiro and Emilia to contend for the necklace.
  • Since our voter abstained for the remaining contestants, his vote will not count towards either of them, i.e. exhausted. If we consider their interests, the result will not matter to them because all of their choices are out.

The most important change in this iteration was allowing past ISML award winners (ordered by fewer awards won and date of first win), which makes sense considering the last three periods (emerald, ruby, diamond) are contested among the top 32 regular season survivors, many of which have already won a poster before. If there was no such rule, there wouldn't be enough contestants.

In practice, these exhibition gems are won by "Tier 1 / Tier 2" contestants - those who regularly appear in the playoffs or later regular season stages, and belong to popular anime series with active voter bases in ISML. Furthermore, past ISML award winners are more likely to win these gems than the award-less contestants because of their relative popularity. This has started in ISML 2021 when four characters who have won a poster before (Okazaki, Megumin, Index, and Nasa) claimed their yearly bracelets and rings, all during the regular season's third split.
