Crown

The International Saimoe League has a recurring award named Divine Circlet (female) and Divine Crown (male). Throughout the tournament's history, these awards have undergone multiple iterations, each one different than their previous appearance.

History[]

Introduction & Division Circlets (2011-2015)[]

The Divine Circlet award was first introduced in 2011 as an Exhibition award contested during the main tournament's playoff stage. It was a 4-man single-elimination bracket, won by Cardcaptor Sakura Kinomoto.

From 2012 to 2015, the "Circlet" name was given to the Sapphire and Diamond gems as a result of the tournament format being completely overhauled at that time. These "circlets" were awarded to females who won the division playoff brackets of their respective divisions: Sapphire for Nova, and Diamond for Stella. However, these awards are counted as necklaces, since they are part of the main seven gems of the tournament.

Poster Contest & Division Crowns (2015)[]

The 2015 edition would also see the "Divine Circlet" name being re-introduced as an exhibition award for the losers of the regular season, replacing the exhibition gems that were used from 2011-2014. In this version, the divine circlet is higlighted by a four-man bracket similar to 2011, but with an important new feature: the posters of four contestants are selected through a poster contest, where users and official staff alike create their own posters of their chosen character from a template. All submissions are judged by the official ISML staff and popular vote from ISML forums and Tieba Baidu.

The 2015 divine circlet was won by Yui ab Yui from Angel Beats!, defeating Amaburi's Latifa Fleuranza in the final match.

On that same year, the Crown name was introduced, serving the male counterpart to the female's Sapphire and diamond circlets. Unlike the female awards, the crowns were awarded differently: Sapphire was given to the contestant with the highest seeding score at the end of the regular season, while Diamond was contested through a necklace-style match between previous Male Exhibition winners and the top three males who did not appear during the Topaz pendant round. The 2015 crowns are counted as pendants.

Poster Contest Continued (2016-2020)[]

The "poster contest" version of the Divine Circlet continued from 2016 to 2020, while its male Crown version was introduced in 2017. These awards were contested by characters who have been eliminated in the first period of the regular season (first four in 2016, due to its unique format), and those who have failed to qualify at all (highest nomination votes in 2019, and preliminary round 2 in 2020).

Characters are banned from these editions if they have won an ISML award beforehand.

Seasonal Championship (2021-present)[]

In ISML 2021, the function of Divine Circlet and Crown was completely changed because of the major changes done to the seasonal contests, which included a new Male division. In order to make the seasonals more significant and appealing, these awards became the names of the yearly seasonal championship, which are contested by best-performing characters from each seasonal through a playoffs bracket.

As a result of this change, the poster contests were re-assigned into the winners of certain Exhibition tournaments instead:

  • 2021: VTubers and Visual Novels
  • 2022: TBD
