Hatena Yousei, also known as Question Fairy, is a magical girl-themed character created as a mascot for the Japanese education and publishing company Benesse Corporation. She mainly appears in the company's promotional DVDs and edutainment materials, where she is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi. Hatena gained a decent fan following in the Japanese online fandom because of her cute design, resulting in some fan arts in Pixiv and becoming a hot topic in videos uploaded to Nico Nico Douga. Naturally, her popularity has led her to make two appearances in 2channel's Saimoe tournament.
Hatena first appeared in Saimoe 2008 after appearing in a children's-oriented OVA titled チャレンジ1年生でかっこいい1年生にへんしん!DVD (translated by /a/non as "First Grade Challenge"), where she managed to survive into the third round (last 32) before losing to eventual semi-finalist Nagisa Furukawa. The question fairy returned in Saimoe 2010's main bracket after appearing in an OVA titled かっこいい1ねんせいになろう! (translated by /a/non as "Let's Become Cool First Graders!"), but failed to advance out of the first round (a 4-way match).
