- This article is about the Fate character. For the actual legendary figure from ancient Mesopotamian mythology, see his Wikipedia article.
Gilgamesh is an anime character who first appears in Type-Moon's visual novel Fate/stay night, and a prominent character in the Fate series as a whole. He is described as a blonde Archer-class Servant clad in golden armor.
The Golden Archer serves as one of the primary antagonists in the original VN and in Gen Urobuchi's prequel novel Fate/Zero. He also appears in many animated Fate titles, appearing as a supporting character in the spin-offs Fate/kaleid liner and Carnival Phantasm. The King of Kings would eventually get his role as a main protagonist in an anime adaptation of one of Fate/Grand Order chapters named Babylonia, which is loosely based on the ancient Mesopotamian mythology from which he originates.
Gilgamesh is one of the most popular characters in the Fate universe. While he is a respectably strong character in r/anime and ISML, he holds the honor of being the first male character in the series to win a major contest, as he secured a flawless victory in China's Bilibili Moe in 2018. His victory in that tournament is remarkable for being the first-ever top-seeded champion in its history, as well as being the only BMoe champion to never fall behind in any of his matches.
ISML Profile Flavor Text[]
"It might not be for the Holy Grail, but a scepter proving that he is the most popular male character in the world should suffice. In fact, it might as well be his.
In a war where secrecy is seen as key to victory, the Babylonian hero Gilgamesh wastes little time not only introducing himself to his opponents but also revealing his true name. Gilgamesh's opponents are free to try to use his history and background against him – he could not care any less. After all, he is going to win this contest anyway, regardless of what they throw at him. That much is predetermined.
Although prideful and vain, Gilgamesh can back his attitude up with his overwhelming power. He can create portals which provide him with an endless supply of weapons. Each piece of weaponry can pierce through even the toughest of armor and skin. Each is launched at his targets with tremendous speed at Gilgamesh's command. And as the bodies of his opponents fall before his feet one after another, Gilgamesh simply laughs. Not because his opponents are weak, but because he has proven once again his rightful place at the top of the world.
The Gate of Babylon only needs one king. All living beings, kneel before the true monarch, Gilgamesh!"
