Eren Yeager (spelled Eren Jaeger in the anime) is the main protagonist of Hajime Isayama's manga and anime series Attack on Titan.

Eren is one of the most recognizable anime characters in his generation due to being the protagonist of one of the highest-acclaimed manga series of his time. However, he takes a backseat in popularity in anime contests behind his compatriots Levi and Mikasa Ackerman, and even Erwin Smith at some points. The soldier has a history of mediocrity in r/anime's Best Guy and Character, and is yet to advance to the ISML playoffs, with the closest one happening in 2018 where he was eliminated in the very last wildcard round.

That all changed with the release of Attack on Titan's fourth season in 2021, which adapts chapters 91 of the manga and beyond. With this anime adaptation being broadcasted, Eren finally gets his chance to claim the spotlight after years of mediocrity --- starting with the soldier advancing to the final of r/anime's Best Character 5, where he gave way to FMA's Edward Elric.

Background[]

In the beginning of the story, Eren Yeager is a young boy living together with his childhood friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert in a town called Shinganshina District. The town is situated at the edge of Wall Maria, the outermost of three giant concrete perimeters that serve to protect the last of humanity inside it from man-eating Titans.

Eren is a loud, impulsive individual whose dream is to see the world outside the walls. He doesn't like people being content with living inside them, comparing them to animals in a cage. However, in one fateful day, Wall Maria was breached, and after seeing his mother get eaten by a Titan in the ensuing invasion, a burning desire was instilled within him: the desire to ERADICATE ALL TITANS FROM THIS WORLD.

That's basically the first two chapters of the manga. Due to Attack on Titan's complex plot and multiple series-changing revelations, it is best to read the manga or watch the anime right away, as Eren undergoes significant changes in characterization throughout the story.

Contest History[]

r/anime Contests[]

FIRST TASTE OF SUCCESS[]

Eren's next contest, Best Character 5, would eventually become his best contest yet largely because of these reasons:

  • Attack on Titan is one of the subreddit's highest-rated shows;
  • Season 4 will release in December 2020, coinciding with the schedule of Best Character 5; and
  • the fourth season airing at that time will showcase Eren's important moments.

Yeager's campaign started by earning the 15th seed (just below Erwin Smith, who sits at #11). With his appearance in the fourth round a formality, he faced the underseeded powerhouse Killua Zoldyck (#50), beating him by exactly 100 votes. After that comes a same-series duel against his childhood friend Mikasa (#18). While there were concerns about Mikasa beating him due to the "waifu" factor, they were quickly proven wrong as Eren handily defeated the Ackerman to advance to the Sweet 16, where produced an upset against the highly-rated Konosuba protagonist Kazuma Satou (#2) to make his first-ever Elite Eight appearance.

Eren's victory against Re:Zero protagonist and fellow elite eight debutant Subaru Natsuki (#10) is considered by some as well-deserved since both characters receive substantial development in the story, which is a trait many users consider a requirement to win Best Character. The soldier then overpowered his commander Erwin (#11), who was also making his first-ever semi-finals appearance, in order to book a place in the grand finals where FMA main guy Edward Elric awaits. The final ended with the soldier losing to the alchemist by a large amount of votes. Despite this loss, it's still considered a victory for both contestants: Edward finally gets into r/anime's Hall of Fame, while Eren gets another better opportunity to repeat his success.

KEEP MOVING FORWARD[]

I just keep moving forward. Until my enemies are destroyed.
Eren Yeager, Chapter 100 / S04 Ep. 4

After his breakthrough in the last character contest, Eren sets his eyes on the next major contest: Best Guy 7, held during the Winter 2021 season, right in the middle of the anime's season 4 airdate. Several users have expected him to secure the first seed and trample all of his opponents en route to the title, as Eren's highlights will most likely have been broadcasted by the time that contest has started.
