Vote Points (VP) is a statistic used in the International Saimoe League. It is usually displayed in ISML's tables as CVP (Cumulative Vote Points), i.e. a character's accumulated vote points at the time. Introduced in ISML 2016, CVP is an important value for the organizers since it indicates each character's voting strength relative to the entire competition, making it suitable for determining a character's "seed" that will decide their opponent(s) in the regular season's group stages and in the playoffs.

A related stat named Vote Points Difference (VPD), and its equivalent "total value" CVPD, was introduced in ISML 2019 and is primarily used as a parameter for ranking characters in the group stage, usually as a tiebreaker if two or more characters have the same number of wins. Both the CVP and CVPD values are still in use as of ISML 2021.

How to find Vote Points?[]

A character gains vote points after every match. It is calculated by dividing their votes by the average of all votes cast during that round.

  • VF = "Votes For" (Player's votes)
  • Total VF = Total votes cast during that round (Add all characters' votes, including the player's, and all other matches outside of the regular season)
  • Players is simply the total number of characters present a particular round. Pairs (e.g. couples/ships like Oreki x Chitanda and exhibition pairs like Zuko / Todoroki) are counted as one player for this purpose.
    • The vote points gained by each pair will be split in half between its members.
  • Vote points are calculated on a round-by-round basis. These values will be added altogether to form the cumulative vote points.

Example:

  • Suppose File:Monkey D. Luffy.png Monkey D. Luffy wins Aquamarine Round 1 against File:Naruto Uzumaki.png Naruto Uzumaki, 6969-4200. The total number of votes cast was 777777, while 72 contestants were present during that round. Using the above formulas, we get:
  • Luffy: = 0.645 VP (rounded to thousandths)
  • Naruto: = 0.389 VP

Vote Points Difference

  • Once VP is found, we can now subtract both characters' values to find their VPD for a given round.
  • Using the example above, 0.645 - 0.389 yields:
    • Luffy: 0.256 VPD;   Naruto: -0.256 VPD.
  • The VPD stat is likewise gained after each round, and is added together to form the CVPD stat.
  • For pairs, same rules as VP apply: they count as one player, and the value is then divided between each member.

In practice, vote points and VPD are counted from 1v1 matches only for the purposes of finding the CVP and CVPD. Necklace, pendant, wildcard, and other matches involving 3+ characters are not included.
